Why I Take Selfies with My DSLR

SkylarMay 19, 2015

I’m going to be honest right off the bat. I take selfies with my DSLR camera. If you follow me on Instagram or are a consistent reader, pictures of myself have been popping up more often. That’s because I go out and take selfies with my DSLR camera. Ol Nik’ as I call him (nikon d90).  Now let me explain why I do this:

may17-6

1// Because one of my favorite ways to reset and rejuvenate for the week is to go outside around golden hour and take pictures.

2// And no I’m not trying to be a fashion blogger.

3// Why don’t you take someone to take pictures of? Because they would be infringing on my alone time. I don’t want anyone else with me. It would completely mess up my vibe.

4// If I went out with the sole intention of getting some nice landscape/nature photos, I would be done in under 30 minutes and would likely get bored. This keeps me busy and gives me tons, tons, tons of photos to go through and delete.

may17-10

5// I like to get better at working with my camera in different situations. I’ve definitely improved with using my tripod and my remote. Those are two necessities.

6// Sometimes I think I wear really cute outfits.

7// I may only be 22, almost 23, but I’m not going to look this way forever. I’m hoping my kids will look at these someday and say “Mom you were smokin’.” But in reality they’ll likely say “Mom. What were you wearing?”

8// Making yourself fake laugh for a photo makes you feel a bit ridiculous and almost a little loony. But the results are typically worth it and are more enjoyable to look at than a smile and pose photo.

may17-3

9//I am someone who does care what other people think of me.  I care a lot. Sometimes it prevents me from doing things. Well photography has always been something that pushes me out of my comfort zone. Taking pictures of other people and even selfies of myself continually pushes me out of that zone.

10// Because I can accidentally make weird things like hanging my hair in the light for a test photo turn out to be interesting. Lens flares also make my soul happy. (Look. You can see the remote in my hand. Oops.)

may17-11

11// I’m one of the most conceited people you will ever meet. Just kidding. I’m typically on the opposite end of that spectrum, so I can use a boost in self-confidence every now and then.

12// On this particular day I wanted some photos I could practice editing in Lightroom with. Some solid black and whites were a goal, and these turned out better than I thought.

13// I simply love to take pictures.

What is something you love to do that know one knows or that may be seen as weird?

I wish I could do this. I think I would feel like I’m being way too big of a dork (not that you are, I would be though). Going through the pictures, do you ever think they look good and then look again and think they look aweful? I’m pretty sure that would happen to me if I took my own pictures just because it happens when other people take my pictures. Definitely something I will be considering more often. What kind of remote do you use?

I love this! I take selfies with my DSLR camera, too. It’s great practice for me and it’s a way to help me feel more confident!
