The Story Behind My Blog Name

SkylarSeptember 7, 2015

Happy Labor Day everyone!! Today I’m joining Bailey at Brave Love blog for today’s Blog-Tember prompt: Tell us about your blog name. Where did it come from?

Blonde-Freedom-Blog-Name-1

Let me start from the beginning. It all began in 2012. I had stumbled into the blog world and was an avid health and fitness blog reader. I inhaled every post I could from the likes of Julie at Peanut Butter Fingers and Tina at Carrots ‘N’ Cake. I was in college and always searching for workouts and ways to eat healthier. Of course they both post workouts, healthy recipes, and share a little bit about their life. I was in love with this new world of blogging.

Eventually I got the strong desire to start my own blog. I started out with a Tumblr account, which I enjoyed. However, it wasn’t enough. Tumblr is more for visual content than it is for writing. I wanted my own space with lots of space to write. Thus my first blog The Blonde In Black was born. The explanation of that name is pretty easy. I had blonde hair and wore black all the time (still do to this day).

Once I had started my own blog I knew I was on the path to blogger fame. I just knew I was going to become the next up and coming health and fitness blogger. Apparently that dream didn’t quite work out. I always wanted it in my head, but truthfully I didn’t create content that would lead to that.

Fast forward to the summer of 2014. I wanted to make the jump to a self-hosted blog. I started looking into a web hosting site and I learned the devastating news that The Blonde In Black was already taken. That’s right. My blog identity was taken by another blonde in black. So I had two options. I either throw my hands in the air and give up on blogging or I get over it and come up with a new blog name.

So I came up with a new blog name: Blonde Freedom.

It took a few weeks for me to decide on it. I knew I wanted it to be somewhat similar to my first blog name, but needed to be something I could grow with. There isn’t much of a story behind “blonde.” I simply have blonde hair and don’t ever plan on changing that. But there is a little more thought behind the word freedom.

Freedom. According to google it means: “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.” “the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved.”

The second half of that definition is what speaks to me. You don’t know how special that word is until you’re in a place where you don’t feel free. Where you feel like a little bird in a cage. Where you feel constricted and controlled and not free to be yourself. I felt that way once and it took a long, messy battle to escape that enslaved feeling. Once I had those first tastes of freedom I vowed to myself that I would never return to that feeling of being in a cage again.

Maybe one day I’ll tell you a more detailed story about what I mean by “battle”,  but I’m still figuring out what it really means to be free and how to feel that way in all areas of my life: physically, emotionally, spiritually, relationally, and any other “lly” word that goes. It’s an ongoing process and I think it always will be.

The bible says a lot about being free and I always find comfort in those verses. Such as 2 Corinthians 3:17 “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” Christ has set us free from the chains of sin. We are set free from fear. We are set free from…anything and everything. You just have to let yourself accept that and that can be hard.

Maybe I’ll write more content that speaks a little more about “freedom” as I’m starting to get back into blogging. No promises. I just love having this space to document my life and to share that with all of you! Enjoy your Monday!

What a great story! I love these verses! Isn’t it amazing how much comfort we can find in various verses?! I just love the TRUTH! It’s amazing how blessed we are to live in such a free place, but it’s also amazing how trapped we can feel sometimes… glad that you are embracing your freedom and finding peace in it!
