Why Reunions With Your Best Friends Rock

SkylarNovember 11, 2014

This past weekend was Homecoming weekend here at NMSU. Three of my best friends who no longer live here came in for the weekend festivities. Finally, our group of 6 best girlfriends was together again.

Friday night was spent hanging out in sweat pants and catching up.

Saturday morning we arrived at our sorority house to watch the Homecoming parade. This time since we are alumni we got to watch the parade instead of being in it. That meant we got to indulge in the treats they have ready for the alumni parade watchers. We’ve been looking forward to this since we were freshman because alumni get to enjoy things like this lovely donut…

We sat. We saw. We cheered. We watched that Homecoming Parade like it was our job. Then we decided we were truly hungry and left to go eat. Priorities.

To summarize my weekend here are some reasons why reunions with your best friends rock:

You realize nothing has changed. We picked up right where we left off. No weirdness or awkwardness or anything like that. If there is a group of people who I’m not awkward around then that’s a big deal.

You get to hang out. You forgot how fun it is just to lay around and simply talk after not getting to do that for awhile.

You realize you’re not the only one who doesn’t have your life figured out. I already knew this, but we’re all at an exciting point in our lives where we’re trying to figure out our next step. It’s exciting to hear each of my friends’ hopes and plans and dreams. It’s so encouraging to be able to talk about my own dreams and plans and know that my friends support me.

You eat a LOT of good food. I’ll show you the damage tomorrow for What I Ate Wednesday. Basically my body was begging for a piece of lettuce after the weekend.

You try new things. Like going to that biker bar you avoided because it looked too sketchy. It turns out that biker bars are pretty fun places!

You get to laugh a lot. I think my friends are some of the funniest people I know. We tell old stories from our sorority life days and find horrific accounts on Instagram to make fun of.

You’re reminded why your friends are your friends. When life gets busy and you don’t get to see your friends as often, it’s easy for them to retreat to the back burner of your mind. There’s a reason why you make the time to get together and plan for future reunions. This weekend was a reminder of how much I love my friends and how grateful I am that I have them in my life.

Most importantly, you get some new jams. My spotify playlist has grown after this last weekend, but all of the songs aren’t really appropriate to share. Except this one from Timeflies. I dare you not to fall in love with him. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

We had a weekend that none of wanted to end, but of course weekends always end too soon and we all had to face reality again.  So that is why reunions with your best friends rock!

How was your weekend? How do you keep in touch with your best friends?

I love getting together with my friends from back home. It always amazes me how really nothing has changed, and how similar we still are even though we’ve grown into different people during college.
