Hemp Hearts Energy Balls
Looking for a healthy bite sized snack that will satisfy your sweet tooth without killing your healthy eating? Then I have the perfect recipe for you today!
A few weeks ago I received a package of Manitoba Hemp Hearts to review through being a Sweat Pink Ambassador. Once I had read about what Hemp Hearts were I knew they were just what I needed to incorporate into my healthy energy ball recipe. First, let’s learn about what Hemp Hearts are all about!
When you hear the word hemp you may think about those embarrassing chokers and bracelets you would make for your friends if you were a 90s kid. If that’s what comes to your head then we’re almost on the right track! Hemp Hearts do come from the same plant that hemp for jewelry comes from! Hemp is a versatile plant used for food, clothing, rope, paper, building materials, animal bedding/herd, plastic to name a few.
The people at Manitoba harvest hemp solely for the purpose of food. These little Hemp Hearts have a slightly nutty flavor like a sesame seed and a pine nut combined. They’re versatile and can be used with whatever you desire. Sprinkle a handful on your spinach salad or add some as a topping to your smoothie!
Not only are Hemp Hearts tasty, they are also packed with nutrients! They pack in 10 grams of protein and 10 grams of omegas per 30 grams serving. Wow!
Manitoba is also being generous enough to offer you 20% off any purchase at ManitobaHarvest.com with the code HHSweatPink14. Head over today to get your discounted Hemp Hearts before the discount code ends on November 30, 2014.
Now let’s get to the fun part. Student teaching has kept me busy and on-the-go throughout the school day. When I sit down for my break at lunch I always want to end my meal with something sweet to satisfy my sweet tooth cravings. I don’t want to bust out a bag of M&Ms, so I’ve been making healthy energy balls to hold me over and kill that sweet desire.
These energy balls are easy to make and you likely have most of the ingredients in your pantry! I set aside time on Sundays to prep food for the week and these energy balls are always on my list! They take me less than 20 minutes to make and then I’m set for the week!
For any peanut butter and chocolate lovers these energy bites are the perfect healthy snack! I’ll pop one in to settle my rumbling stomach when I get up in the morning and I’ll pack 2-3 for my lunch at school. If you’re a snack person, then you need to try these out.
They’re bite sized which makes them easy to grab on your way out the door or when you just need a little snack. There are so many different options for what you can have in your energy bites too that you don’t have to run to the store every time you make them. For this occasion Hemp Hearts were the perfect addition to add into this recipe!
- 1 cup of oats
- 3/4 cup of peanut butter or nut butter
- 1/3 cup of honey
- 1/4 cup of Manitoba Hemp Hearts
- 1/4 cup of diced almonds
- 1 scoop of protein powder
- 1 tsp of vanilla
- 1/4 cup of mini chocolate chips
- Combine all ingredients into a mixing bowl.
- Stir together until it is well blended.
- Taking small bite sized pieces of the mixture roll it together between your palms until a ball is formed.
- After you have formed all of the balls place them into the refrigerator to set for 30 minutes.
- Use peanut butter or nut butter of your choice. It is best to avoid nut butters with oil that settles on the tops.
- Substitute honey with agave.
- Add in or substitute diced almonds and Hemp hearts with Chia Seeds, Flax Seed, Unsweetened Coconut Flakes, etc.
