From Thoughts to Words

SkylarJanuary 16, 2014

As I was laying in bed last night before my first day back to that college grind, I mentally came to accept that this truly is my last semester of classes. Of course the semester after this one I’ll be doing student teaching, which I can’t even think about right now. Yuck.

But I realized that I really need to start figuring out what I want to do with my life. Where do I want to go? What do I want to do?

For someone who is verbally quiet a majority of the time, my mind is a wild place. Trust me. A lot of thinking, talking, writing, picturing, joke making, day dreaming, baking (kidding),  etc. goes on up in there. Last night it took me awhile before I could quiet my rampant imagination so I could fall asleep.

Being a secondary education major for language arts you would think my career goal is to be a high school English teacher like the ones from movies like Freedom Writers.

While that movie in an inspiration to me as the type of teacher I want to be that is not my career goal. To be truthful I don’t really even have a career goal because I still don’t know what I want to do. I have this conflict of interest between wanting to be a teacher and wanting to be a journalist/blogger/photographer. Who knows how that will manifest. But I do have a few things in mind.

Like the video at the link below. I would love to do something like this:

So I am getting a degree that I don’t really know if I want to use. I mean I do want to be a teacher. I would be great at it. I am one of those crazy people who actually enjoys high school kids and I do know a thing or two about the English language and literature. While teaching is not the best paying job, it sure comes with some great benefits and a schedule that is great for someone who someday wants to be a mom.

But it’s simply not what I dream about doing. I know people don’t necessarily get to do their dream job, but I do want to be doing something that I truly enjoy.

So this semester I would to try to look into and tap into the things that I may want to do for my life. There a few areas of my life that I really want to develop and spend more time doing.

Writing

I do plenty of academic writing throughout the semester. Since I’m basically an English major the majority of my work is writing. I’m not one of those college students who is constantly studying for tests. I’m the one busting out papers last minute.

Anyways, I love to write. I love, love, love to write. Someday I’m sure I’ll tell you more on why. I’m not a creative fiction writer or a poet though sometimes that’s fun too. I just like to write…like this little blog here. I really love writing posts and a lot of the time I’ll write my posts in my head before I ever sit down to type it out and most don’t even get typed out. Basically I want to spend more time writing that is not academic whether that is blogging, journaling, rant writing, or writing for a journalistic source. With that being said I really need to look into more writing opportunities. I have a few ideas in my head.

Photography

Do not ask me if I will take your senior pictures for you.

Do not ask me if I will take pictures of your baby. I’m scared to even hold one so I definitely don’t want to take pictures of one.

Do not ask me if I will take pictures of your family.

I am not about that. Nope. No. Nada.

Except if you have a really great monetary offer in mind.

I like documentary photography and photojournalism. I like photos that tell a story. A story about a person, a place, a time, etc. I also love landscape photography. Nothing excites me more than capturing the fog over the Organs or a sunset spreading vibrant colors through the sky.

I’ve been told by a very reliable source that I have potential…very serious potential as a photographer. So I should probably work on taking advantage of that.

Reading

To be a good writer you need to be a good reader. Writers read all the time. Reading literacy comes in more forms than picking up a 400 page novel. I mean magazines, newspapers, blogs, etc. Plus you can learn a lot of pretty sweet stuff when you read. Suprise suprise.

Blogging

When I don’t get to blog as much as I like it makes me sad. It truly puts a little cloud over my sunshine. Lately my blogging has been rather haphazard due to a sucky fall semester and a winter break with little blogging time but plenty of time for Netflix. I have a much better schedule this semester with school and sorority, so hopefully that includes more time for this little space. Blogging opens a whole other world of doors. You never know where it can take you.

I’m really not too stressed or worried about figuring out what I want to do. It’ll come with time and experience, but it’s just nice to write about it. So anyways…

On a side note please read this article: http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjs538/white-people-that-need-to-be-stopped I literally gasped or had some type of verbal reaction to every one of these things. People are just weird. Have a great day everyone!
