Day in the Life of a High School Teacher

SkylarApril 29, 2015

For today’s post I’d like to give you a peak into what a day in my life looks like. As most of you already know I’m a high school broadcast journalism teacher. I also refer to myself as the media teacher. It’s easier to say. If you’re reading my side-bar or my about me page you’ll see that it says that I’m in college. I’m not anymore. This is my life now:

5:30-5:45 am: Alarm goes off. I wake up. Grab my phone and scroll through Instagram and Twitter.

6:00 am: Hop in the Shower.

6:20 am: Devotional/Study Bible/Reading or Blogging with coffee. Listen to my Indie music.

Day in the life-4

7:00 am: Cook some scrambled eggs with spinach and sausage. Drink my coffee out of my foxy fox cup.

Day in the life-5

7:10 am: “Oh crap I need to get ready.” Do my makeup. Tame my hair. Put on real clothes.

7:45 am: Rush out the door and drive to school.

8:00-8:30 am: At school making sure I’m ready for the day. Usually working on lesson planning or attending meetings.

Day in the life-10

8:40-10:06 am: Film/Video class watching Moonrise Kingdom. In this class we watch films and analyze them.

10:13-11:34 am: Intermediate media class working on Short Story video project. Mostly freshman-sophomores in this class. I check out video equipment and monitor groups editing in the editing bay.

11:44-12:16 pm: Lunch. Hang out with my Bulldawg Broadcast students. Watch movie trailers or video tricks on YouTube. Sometimes we’ll get out equipment and play with it like the picture below.

Day in the life-2

12:26-2:02 pm: Bulldawg Broadcast class. These are the top dogs in the media program who produce a weekly show that the student body watches every Thursday. During class students are independently working on their part on the show. Here’s one of their past shows to get a glimpse of what we do:

2:09-3:30 pm: Media Literacy class. This is my intro class that is beginning to learn video production and editing. They are working in small groups on a silent film project. I check out video cameras and assist small groups editing.

3:30 pm: School is out!

3:30-5:00 pm: 3 days a week I go to CrossFit. Other days I’ll go home and run or do yoga. My house is across town from school so I typically stay at school and work until 5. I work on lesson planning, organizing, and helping my Bulldawg Broadcast students who stay after school.

5:30-7:00 pm: Go to CrossFit! I’m doing competitor workouts and they typically take over an hour to an hour and a half.

Day in the life-8

7:10 8:00 pm: Go home. My sister usually cooks dinner, so I’ll eat dinner and then wash all the dishes.

8:10-10:00 pm: Catch up on blog reading. Prepare blog posts. Random things to be done at home.

Day in the life-6

10:00 pm: In bed reading or still blogging or on social media.

10:30-11:00 pm: Try to go to sleep.

Wake up the next day and do it all over again! So there’s a glimpse into what my life looks like during the week.

Any questions about anything I shared?

What does a day in your life look like?

I always wanted to take the movie analyzing class but couldn’t ever fit it into my schedule. Sounds like a really fun class though.

Luckily, I took one in high school, so I kind of had an idea of what to do with the class! It is a lot of fun. We’ve watched a handful of good movies I haven’t seen before.

I’m so glad you did this-it was really interesting! I still think it’s so amazing that you’re teaching now! I’m actually working on a day in the life post of today-what a coincidence!

How ironic?! I’ll have to read it whenever you post!

That’s what my day looks like, too! Except add: super grumpy in the morning. And take out: everything exercise related. Haha. But your media classes look so interesting and fun!!! So great that your school offers a class like that! 🙂

Haha today I could have added in super grumpy! My kids don’t realize how rare these type of creative programs are in other schools!
