April: Month in Review

SkylarMay 5, 2021

I’m currently in the Denver airport killing some time before the husband and I head to Georgia for a graduation. I’m taking advantage of being at our gate early to get this personal blog post for April up. Yay! April was my last slow month before wedding season kicks off at the end of May. For this month’s recap I’m going to try a slighty different format, so let’s get into it.

Little Things

Warmer weather in Colorado.

New blooms on the plants and trees.

Our cat napping on the top of my camera bag.

Cooking/Eating

A free loaf of coffee shop sourdough bread that the barista guy gave me at the end of a Friday. It totally made my day. I toasted a slice of it in the oven each morning to have on the side with my eggs.

Cooking salmon and homemade chicken strips in the air fryer. For the chicken strips, slice up some chicken breast. Make a basic egg wash. Coat the strips in breadcrumbs. Cook for 5-6 minutes on each side at 400F. I use tongs to flip them over at the 5-6 minute mark. Also, keep in mind you can’t pile them in there. One layer at a time, so it’s takes a bit.

Reading/Watching

I finished book #4, “Drums of Autumn,” in the “Outlander” series by Diana Gabaldon.

We also finally watched Season 4 of the Outlander T.V. show. Of course I loved it! It was interesting to have read the book before watching the show because I knew what was going to happen or supposed to happen. The T.V. version plays out slightly different from the book, so it still was exciting to watch.

Give me a period piece show and I’m a happy girl. I recently watched “Bonfire Destiny” on Netflix and really loved it. I was always ready to see what happened in the next episode. It’s a French miniseries, one season of eight episodes, based on the 1897 Charity Bazaar fire that killed over 100 people. The story follows the lives of three different women following the fire and is a fictionalized version of how their lives were totally upended by the fire. Since it’s a French show, I highly recommend watching it in French, but turning on the English subtitles. I tried to watch in English, but it doesn’t line up as well and truly takes away from the show.

Wearing

At the end of March I bought a pair of Dr. Marten’s 1460 black leather lace up boots and I’m so in love with them. With my new pair of American Eagle mom jeans, I wanted a pair of these to get the look I was going for and to also wear with other looks, like my red dress in the very top photo. These boots are surprisingly comfortable. I always wear a pair of long nike socks with them and just tuck down the tops of my socks, so they aren’t visible above the tops of my boots. I wore these a couple days in Vegas and both days involved a lot of walking and these boots didn’t bother my feet at all. Like none. I was slightly worried since they were new that they might rub blisters, but no problems at all. If these fit your style, then they’re worth it!

Fitness

I started another 15 week strength + bodybuilding cycle in April and have enjoyed it so far. Right now I don’t have many goals with fitness, just continuing to get in my 4 workouts a week and walking/yoga/stretching on the weekends. I still coached a few times a week at the CrossFit Gym as well.

Work Life: Photography

In April I had an engagement session and took wedding portraits for the couple who we went to Vegas to celebrate. So I had some editing to do this month, but it didn’t consume most of my time like other parts of the year. Most of my work time was spent on online assistant hours (something new I’ve been doing) and some blogging for other photographers.

Happenings:

Brandon and I took a trip to Las Vegas to celebrate one of his friend’s getting married. We stayed at Mandalay Bay and the weather was awesome. Since it was a wedding weekend, we had more of an agenda to stay on top of. They got married in a Vegas chapel, but after the ceremony I went with the couple and the wedding party to the Bellagio to take portraits of them. We took their portraits in front of the Bellagio and we luckily made it over to the fountains just in time for the water show. It was a really cool moment to be taking their photos while the water show was going on in the background. Then we headed back to the hotel for their reception in the Foundation Room at Mandalay. Saturday we spent time at the pool and on the strip. I’ll just say it’s a miracle we made our 6 a.m. flight on Sunday. Never doing that again.

Looking forward to:

My sister is having her first baby in mid-May! It’s the first baby in our family, so everyone is beyond excited about this little girl on the way. I’m pretty excited to become an aunt too. Maybe this will be the first baby I hold longer than five minutes. Other than that, wedding season starts up again so I’ll be getting back into the swing of shooting most weekends. You’ll see some highlights from this trip to Georgia next month.  Hope May brings you warm weather and a great month!
